Government threatens FA with £25 million cut in funding

Gerry Sutcliffe, the Sports Minister, has warned the FA that the Government will withdraw £25 million of funding unless they implement recommendations made four years ago.

The Lord Burns report, published in 2005, called for a streamlining of the FA and recommended the introduction of two non-executive directors to the board and wide-ranging reform of the largely white, ageing and male FA Council. The Government have now threatened to withdraw political support and cut annual funding over the FA's apparent lack of progress in implementing these suggestions.

Sutcliffe has also called on the FA to work more harmoniously with the Premier League and Football League and expressed his disappointment at their lack of development in crucial areas of the national game, such as women's football and the increased participation of ethnic minorities in all levels of the game.

"Funding is one lever we've got," Sutcliffe said. "It would be a last resort. But there has to be, and there already is, a recognition that the status quo is not good enough.
